2023 Mock 2.0
(June 17th 2023)
(June 17th 2023)
This pick won't change no matter what happens
There was a report that Wemby won't be playing in Summer League in July but I'm not sure how true that isÂ
Would make sense though with his international season recently ending
(Update: There's now a report by the same website that he WILL play)
Both Miller and Scoot had workouts again with the Hornets this week and Scoot was reportedly more impressive
Still think Charlotte goes with Miller here by picking for better fit with the team
Some rumors that this pick could be traded but I think they should stick with the pick and continue on the timeline
Scoot falls right into the lap of Portland here after a strong workout in Charlotte
There's a report saying New Orleans wants to move up for Scoot but I don't see Portland helping thatÂ
Washington and Toronto are also both interested in moving into the top 3 and this is probably the most likely pick to be traded for those two teams
Houston is reportedly torn on Whitmore or Amen Thompson and the decision will be with a potential Harden reunion in mind
Still think Amen is the pick here and won't affect whether Harden signs here or not
Have to think for the future as well as the now and Amen would be the best pick here
Detroit gets the guy that they really want here and is a perfect fit
Ever since they traded Saddiq Bey, Bojan Bogdanovic has held down the 3 position
But he will eventually be traded and Whitmore will be pefect to fit with Cade and takes the perimeter scoring weight off of Ivey's shoulders
The more I think of this pick, the less I like the idea of picking either Hendricks or Walker at 6 to play with Wagner, Paolo and Wendell as that would create a log jam
Orlando can opt to trade this pick if they feel too much pressure but Ausar is the better of the two in my opinion
Gives them a true playmaking guard to help give Paolo some looks off the ball
There are rumors now circling that Indiana is willing to move back out of this pick, so there's a chance they won't pick here Thursday night (look for TOR to move up here)
Still taking Hendricks due to the great workout he had with them and his positional versatility to play at the 3 or 4
Gets it done on all aspects on the court and would be an immediate impact
I almsot went with a shock pick here for Washington at guard but decide to go with the more obvious pick based on what we have seen
Black brings great size and positional versatility but will maintain his playmaking and defensive ability no matter where he plays on the court
New point guard of the future to start off under new management
After a longer wait than expected for Walker, he finally finds a new home and becomes a defensive nightmare with the other Walker... Kessler (i'm funny)
Looking at it here, you can play Lauri at the 3 due to his scoring ability, and allow Jarace to play down low and focus on defense
Walker's continuous improvement from three makes him an intruiguing prospect overall and Utah gets a steal here at 9
This pick is almost a guarantee that it gets traded and Dallas is picking a little later in the lottery/firstÂ
I'm going to still mock Dick here just because he would still be a great spot up threat for Luka when causing defenses to collapse
I like Gradey's defensive upside too despite his athleticism being in question, he finds himself in the right spots and it isn't a lack of hustle either
I know my reasoning earlier for picking Ausar is because of the logjam at defensive big men
So I'm taking one here cause you can't let him slip any farther and with a pick early in the second round, they can find a pure shooter there
Don't count out this pick being traded as well to help gather more draft capital for the future
Sam Presti reportedly took a trip out to France to watch Coulibaly in person to get a feel for who he is and how good he is
I think that's a sign that OKC could lean towards him and it would be a great pick here by them
Getting a similar type of player in Jalen Williams (J-Dub) last year at this exact pick, 3&D wings are some of the most valuable players in basketball and it will help build a core for the future
I think this is more of an obvious pick to me than most if Toronto doesn't trade up, especially after Wallace canceled all of his workouts after Toronto
Now after hiring former Grizzlies assistant coach, Darko Rajakovic, to be their franchise's new head coach, this would be a perfect pick
Darko specializes in player development (see Desmond Bane and Tyus Jones' improvements) and would help kick start off the new era under him with a point guard like Wallace that can play on both sides of the ball
New Orleans is actively trying to trade up into the top 3 to get Scoot Henderson, but it will be impossible to do so unless they give up one of Zion or Brandon Ingram
If they stay here, they could give a shot at Hawkins who is an elite three point shooter and would instantly play for them
With having plenty of guards on the roster who can defend, Hawkins wouldn't have to worry as much with his lack of defense
So it might be confusing why Atlanta takes a guard here but let me explain
Dejounte Murray is on the last year of his contract and is reportedly up to trade potentially, and didn't really enjoy last year in Atlanta
We also know Trae Young has the potential to be traded at any point with one complaint by him
Atlanta gets a great combo guard and if both stay in ATL, the worst case is you get a fantastic backup guard that will eventually play great minutes and is a steal here at 15
There's a chance that this pick is traded on draft night as well
After missing out on their favorite prospect in Anthony Black, they take a shot on a guard with good upside to pair with their big man pick at 9
JHS brings great defense, solid playmaking and decent shot creating ability
Has time to develop here in Utah and a lot of people expect him to turn out into something
There are reports that the Lakers want to move back in the draft so this pick could be moved before or on draft night
We here don't do mock trades yet, so we are going to stick with Miller here who has late lottery potential so getting him at 17 is a steal for LA
If they ship off Vanderbilt in a trade, he fills in there. Otherwise he is a Rui Hachimura insurance with him set to hit restricted free agency
Fits into the defensive minded Lakers team
With all these recent rumors around some star players in the NBA, I'd be willing to bet by draft night Miami isn't picking here, or if they are, this player won't be going to South Beach by October
Sticking with Nick Smith knowing the teams that could end up with this pick and they could want him as well
If no trade happens, Miami gets a high upside scoring guard who will fill the role of Gabe Vincent if he leaves in free agency
I know it's lame, but for the third time in a row, I'm sticking with the same pick for a team
But this one just makes too much sense, especially with the team that is picking here
With Jonathan Kuminga reportedly available for trade, and Donte DiVincenzo most likely becoming a free agent, that opens up a new spot/role for Golden State that Howard will fill
Jonathan Givony of ESPN and Draft Express has this pick as well and I think there's a good chance we see this one come true
I don't think Houston is going to pick here at 20 as they are shopping this pick and I know a certain team that would potentially want to move here (wink, wink)
If they stick and pick, I think Lewis will fit well especially after drafting Amen at 4
With their interest in Whitmore at 4 as well, getting Lewis at 20 would be a fantastic pick in relation to him with the scoring upside
I think one of these two Brooklyn picks end up getting traded
I know it looks like I'm copying Jonathan Givony, but I think if there are one of the wing/guards that will drop more, it will be George
But here in Brooklyn, he can shine, especially once some of the log jams at guard end up getting cleared up
Sticking with Dariq here at 22, he could be picked 21, who knows. Either way I'm mocking him to go to Brooklyn
Similar player to Mikal Bridges and with his injury, doesn't have any pressure with Brooklyn to have to rush back
Going to be a steal here at 22, even though a ton of people think he could go as low as the second round
I hate that people think and assume that Sensabaugh will drop all the way down here because I really like the prospect of him, showing great upside of a spark plug scorer off the bench for any team and might be the most NBA ready scorer
With drafting Scoot at 3 (or maybe not) Sensabaugh would be a great wing scorer to pair up with him immediately
Like I mentioned, I think he is one of the NBA ready guys scoring wise so if you do keep Dame, he will be an actual asset to him this year
This is the second most obvious pick outside of Wembanyama at 1
Kings need another wing scorer with defensive upside, so why not get their 4th pick last year's twin brother
Both play very similar to one another, the only difference is Kris shows some playmaking ability compared to Keegans shooting strength but this is a no brainer reunion pick
It is reported that Memphis is "aggressively" trying to move up to the late lottery or middle of the first round
I think whether we move up a little or not, Podz is our pick here after watching him even more
Scarily similar to Luke Kennard with his form, arc and push shot
6'5, 205 lbs, great rebounder for his size (9 rpg). He says he models his game after Ginobili, Brunson, Luka and DiVincenzo
Plays great off the ball and on the ball, shooting over 40% from three last year and a very underrated playmaker. With Ja's suspension or Tyus Jones eventually leaving, Podz is ready to play now and is the pick here
This pick is reportedly on the trade block as well is 29 and 32 so there's a chance the Pacers don't pick here
But if they do, they could take a swing at a guy who is similar to Haliburton
Jones is a taller guard with great IQ, loves to pass but can defend and shoot as well
Works well on and off the ball offensively
Fantastic finisher, quick enough to get out and run in transition and be effective as either a 3 or 4
Can defend 1-4 and can hold his own with 4's
Easy lob contender with Lamelo that could make the Hornets commentator lose his mind
Working on his shot, but the form looks good, it's about getting more consistent and in Charlotte, there's no pressure on him
Sheppard has risen quickly on a lot of boards due to his impressive workouts recently with teams and shows real effectiveness as a spot up shooter
After drafting a point guard and a big man defender, why not complete the trifecta with a knockdown shooter
With being a more unknown prospect, Utah could be that team that takes the swing on him especially later in the first round here
I'm going to stick with GG Jackson here at 29, as he is gaining a bunch of traction late on in the draft process
Teams like his upside as either a 2 or 3 in the league and if you're Indy here, you might want to take a shot on the former top recruit
This pick could also be traded, so there's a chance they might not pick here
To round out the first round, I'm going with Clowney here again for LAC
I think he can end up going higher, but he's too raw of a prospect for the other teams to want to take a shot on
Here in LA, they are in need of a new backup big and he can be inserted to help early on while still going through the process
