Day of Draft (6/25)
Alex McNinch (YSD)
1) Dallas Mavericks
Not much more else to say here about getting Flagg, you know what you are getting with him
Daniel Gafford signed an extension with the organization, so now it will be interesting to see the direction Dallas goes with their frontcourt group
Nonetheless, Flagg will be the franchise cornerstone piece to build around as a new era of Mavericks basketball embarks Wednesday night
2) San Antonio Spurs
With Durant off the table, the Spurs have shut down any possibility of trading the number 2 overall pick and have their sights on Dylan Harper
The big question is going to be what do they do with the plethora of guards? Well, there are still moves to be made, and Stephon Castle can play the 3 if need
Harper's ability to score at every level and playmake at a high level instantly makes him stand out amongst the guards in this class
3) Philadelphia 76ers
Top 3 rounding out as all locks with Edgecombe being the pick again for the 76ers
Makes perfect sense for them to get a young wing with a ton of athleticism and defensive upside for the future once Paul George takes his dip and eventually hangs it up
Makes Philly's offseason moves a bit easier to navigate knowing that you are picking here at 3
4) Charlotte Hornets
We still remain the same as 2.0 with Knueppel going 4th here to Charlotte
In the previous mock, I mentioned how for years it has been projected the Hornets would end up drafting a pure shooter at the top of the draft, but always end up going with a wing that is the complete opposite
Kneuppel's upside is much higher than just a pure shooter. With Lamelo is allows some comfort at the perimeter knowing he can create shots for a guy who is able to knock it down with ease
5) Utah Jazz
All up until the day of, it still is in question what Utah will do here at 5, but I will go with an option based on how their offseason might go looking forward
Johnson's on-ball scoring presence is one of the best in the class and with the emergence of Isaiah Collier, the Jazz could turn to the idea of pairing him with a scoring guard next to him
With Jordan Clarkson and Collin Sexton as good as gone, they could replace them with a guy like Johnson as a natural scorer
6) Washington Wizards
Still sticking with Ace Bailey here for the Wizards, I think for what he wants and what the team has, it is one of the no-brainer spots for him to land
Now after trading Jordan Poole for CJ McCollum, they are bracing for the offensive take that Bailey will bring. Not only that, but now a tandem of Smart, McCollum, and Middleton is a great veteran leadership locker room for Bailey to get his head on track going forward
7) New Orleans Pelicans
There are reports that the Pelicans are trying to jump into the top 5 to get Ace Bailey, but I am not sure how possible that will end up being based on their recent moves and the teams they can trade with
The direction the Pelicans are going is confusing, and I would not be surprised if they move off Dejounte Murray -- who they acquired last offseason -- by the trade deadline in February, which opens up Fears to be the point guard going forward
Fears still has a ton to develop on after a good freshman year, but New Orleans is one of the few teams that makes sense for him
8) Brooklyn Nets
Now I don't necessarily think that Maluach should fall this far, nor will he probably, but based on other team's likes and needs, they could steer in a different direction
The Nets already have Nic Claxton signed long-term, but have shown signs of moving him after a down year last year
Maluach has a higher defensive upside than the already great defensive big that Claxton is, and could eventually move on from for Maluach to be the guy
Pay attention to a team trading up into 8 now after the Nets have five first round picks
9) Toronto Raptors
Essengue is my final pick for the Raptors at 9 and it will add to an already crazy good wing core that the Raptors have going on
With rumors of RJ Barrett on the move, the Raptors could swing for a big here, but I think the prospect of getting Essengue is too good to pass up on
Great defense with size and length, the Raptors can run out some crazy lineups with Ingram, Barnes, and Essengue
10) Phoenix Suns
It's down to two guys here for the Suns, but ultimately there is too much smoke around them wanting a center upgrade for them to pass up on the best one available
Queen can play as the 5, but also the ability to play the 4 easily next to Nick Richards in a bigger lineup, due to Queen's above average ball handle for his position and size
Wouldn't be surprised if they end up going guard or wing here, as point guard is a need, but Devin Booker can run the de facto point guard while everyone else runs around him
11) Portland Trail Blazers
Sticking with my gut here and going with Jakucionas for the Blazers, even after making the trade for Jrue Holiday -- another point guard
They aren't committed to Holiday long-term, and shipping off Simons shows they are willing to re-evaluate their guard rotation. Jakucionas brings comfortable ball handling and spacing to the floor
Immediately throwing him in as the backup point guard should help clean up any bench issues this team might've had as Portland starts to build something very interesting
12) Chicago Bulls
There is a chance now that Bryant could go one spot ahead of Chicago at 12, and if so, I would expect them to turn to a guard
Bryant just brings so much offensive power in transition and spacing to pass up on, and his defensive upside shows all the makings of a solid 3&D wing
The Bulls are showing interest in trading Patrick Williams, so this clears up the idea of them wanting more wings to build this core around
13) Atlanta Hawks (via SAC)
The trade that took place last night for the Hawks acquiring Kristaps Porzingis really shakes some things up on maybe the direction here, but with it being an expiring contract, I would stick with a big
Either Newell or Beringer here, but I'll go with the young upside in the former top 10 recruit in Asa Newell
Had him going much lower but there's smoke he is at the top of the Hawks board here. Up and down year at Georgia, but for his size, he is a fantastic rebounder. Will need to see how his shot develops.
14) San Antonio Spurs (via ATL)
After getting Harper at 2, the Spurs turn towards fitting a big alongside Wembanyama, so we go with his fellow countryman in Beringer
PnR lob player, very similar to Jaxson Hayes role now. Brings a lot of size and length to that frontcourt with a different playstyle than Wemby
There's a chance this pick could get traded to move back and gain more assets for an eventual massive trade but if they stick, Beringer should be the direction I see them going in
15) Oklahoma City Thunder (via MIA)
As a Grizzlies fan and rival fan, this kills me to see happen right before the pick, but primarily because Murray-Boyles is such an awesome and fun prospect that falls here
Defense is all that he is about, and it only makes a Thunder team who has intense defense, even better
There are also rumors that OKC are interested in moving into the top 10, but if this is how the draft board falls, they would 100% stick to take the value here
16) Memphis Grizzlies (via ORL)
It's put up or shut up for the Grizz with the mentality that they don't need youth. So will they move off the 16th pick, or stay and get a guy like Cedric Coward who has had a Jalen Williams-like climb as a prospect?Â
Coward will be the guy that Grizzlies fans expected GG Jackson to turn into this past season prior to the foot injury. Above average shooter, great finisher, defensive upside, and a ton of size and length.Â
Having Coward off the bench with Wells would be a great young duo of wings for this group. But keep an eye on the Grizzlies trying to make a move to get established players with this pick
17) Minnesota Timberwolves (via DET)
I've bounced back and forth here for the Wolves at 17, but ultimately land on Clifford to help join this group that is ready to compete with a win-now pick
Clifford brings just about everything to the table on both sides of the ball, with ball handling at his size being the most intriguing attribute
Minnesota could attach this pick in a trade right before the draft starts, but based on players they could offload in the coming weeks, Clifford is a good replacement
18) Washington Wizards (via MEM)
I've been very adamant on Sorber being a Wizard by the end of tonight, and I will stick to that idea here again
Perfect type of size and big to play next to Alex Sarr that helps balance out the perimeter game with Sorber's inside presence
This is also a pick to keep note of being on the move due to being right outside of the lottery, and the Wizards being flexible with the guys in the 20's to draft
19) Brooklyn Nets (MIL)
This is one of two draft night slides that will be the stories to pay attention to, and Brooklyn gets a steal here
Getting a big with their first pick at 9, they go with a big hybrid guard in Egor Demin who had an up and down year at BYU, but was highly touted coming over to the states this time last year
Size, playmaking, and a developing shot is what is loved the most about Egor, but the fact he can play 1-3 on the court and be effective is also great. Could go as high as 10, but some rumors he could slide
20) Miami Heat (via GSW)
Outside of the top 2, this is the pick I am most confident in picking now, due to this changing within the past 48 hours
Clayton took two trips to Miami for workouts and cancelled every other trip following it, so it seems as if he got a promise from the Heat to be picked at 20
Bias aside, he is a top 3 shooter in the class, with sneaky crazy athleticism that he held back on a ton this past year at Florida. Will need to work on his ball handling a bit more but was much improved. Defense he isn't very good shuffling, but his recovery and IQ is very solid
Miami is getting a dawg to stay at home and continue the legacy of a Florida Gator on the Miami Heat
21) Utah Jazz (via MIN)
In comes the other massive draft slide in son of NBA legend, Jason Richardson, Jace. Some questionable measurables combined with his late blooming season at Michigan State, teams seem hesistant on him earlier on
For Utah with multiple first round picks, this is an easy shot on Richardson here due to his great shooting ability
Richardson believes he can be a lead guard at the next level and in Utah, he might be given the opportunity to chase that idea and prove himself
22) Brooklyn Nets (via ATL)
The third of Brooklyn's now FIVE first round picks (this one from the Porzingis 3-team trade) comes on the board and they get a guy I mocked to them previously in Traore
Had them getting him earlier but how the board has gone now, I opt to try and steal him before another team trades up to get him
Top tier playmaking from Traore, as he was one of the top point guard prospects coming into this draft cycle, but dipped due to his inconsistent play
23) New Orleans Pelicans (via IND)
Feel pretty confident that the Pelicans are going to go after a big man with this pick and Wolf is the best one available
Wolf's draft stock is as high at 17 and as low as around 28, but the Pelicans can use him to offset the style that Yves Missi brings as a big
Wolf has great ball handling for a big and can create shots for others, which makes him very intriguing to get as a prospect. There's questions about if he can be a 5 at the NBA level, but time will tell
24) Oklahoma City Thunder (LAC)
From picking a guy all about defense and no shooting at 15, they pick a guy here at 24 who's all about shooting and not defense
McNeeley's stock dropped a ton due to his one dimensional offensive season at UConn, but scouts are still in love with the prospect of how he can fit on a NBA roster
I am one of those with his off the screen shooting being very impressive, that if he can develop a game off the dribble, we could be seeing a very sneaky good forward
25) Orlando Magic (via DEN)
I am fully convinced that the Magic want Jase Richardson or Walter Clayton with this pick to fall to them. I am also convinced that Chaz Lanier is a guy that teams who are in need of shooting, value much higher than most
Hence why I've had him going first round in every mock, but this being his highest ranking at 25 now to Orlando
Straight shooter who can be streaky, but unstoppable when hot. He will have a crazy good Summer League and make everyone turn their attention to why they didn't have him ranked higher
26) Brooklyn Nets (via NYK)
Riley is a project pick, who's second half of his freshman year at Illinois was much better than his first half
Brooklyn has a ton of picks here and need to fill a ton of roster spots, so we can see them taking players like Riley who are project picks to help fill out the roster and develop in their system
Riley as a tall isolation scorer with the ability to play well off the ball is good enough for the Nets to jump on the train of
27) Brooklyn Nets (via HOU)
The fifth pick for the Nets is a guy who could probably go higher or a team trades up to be able to get him
Flemming shot up out of nowhere out of St Joseph's and is a big wing who can kind of be a plug and play gadget player
Defense, shooting, playmaking a bit, and interior scoring. Can play pretty much any of 3,4, and a small ball 5.
28) Boston Celtics
A guy who has shot up rankings since the combine, Raynaud is a dynamic big who can shoot it, put it on the floor, and finish pretty well inside
The thing that makes it the most interesting for the Celtics is that he can space the floor and open up that five-wide offense they love to run, although with a new group of guys in that offense
Raynaud is not just a help now but also a long-term project that can help in 3 years once the team is fully put together again
29) Phoenix Suns (via CLE)
Saraf is not well-known, but in the draft world, people love his playmaking ability and rest of the offense upside he can bring
I wouldn't be surprised if a team trades up higher to get him, but also would not be surprised if the Suns trade up for someone else earlier as well
Phoenix went with a big man at 10, but now go with a long-term project point guard with a ton of size now, the Luka Doncic method/idea
30) Los Angeles Clippers (via OKC)
Ivica Zubac jumped out to be one of the top bigs in the NBA last year, but his backup... questionable. So the Clippers try to get a guy here at 30 who can be a lob threat under the basket for this offense, with also having good defensive upside with his size
They could also go wing here, which I've mocked to them before, but think they ultimately go with a big man to help build that frontcourt depth
