Day of First Round (6/25)
Alex McNinch (YSD)
1) Atlanta Hawks
Atlanta ignores all of the hype surrounding the first overall pick and grab a guy who can immediately fit the team's current needs
So many are down on Risacher right now but it is a bit of an overreaction in my opinion and I think he can easily be an above average 3&D player in this league
Clingan would be the only other guy I consider here at #1 if I'm Atlanta, and who knows who ends up making a last second deal
2) Washington Wizards
What a slam dunk pick for the Wizards getting Sarr at #2 to be the guy manning the front down low as a cornerstone piece for this franchise
Sarr declining to interview with the Hawks solidifies this pick for the Wizards capitalizing on the opportunity to get my best player in the class
Could see a world where the Wizards go Castle or Clingan, but all signs point towards Sarr heading to DC
3) Houston Rockets (via BRK)
I originally mocked Sheppard to the Rockets in my 3.0, but decided last minute to go with Clingan
I go with Sheppard here at 3 to help fill the role of being a fantastic perimeter shooter and high upside defensively, creating turnovers and getting out in transition
The Rockets now have swapped some picks around with the Nets to be able to capitalize on this young group to try and go make a splash, so there could be a chance that this is traded by draft time
If not Sheppard, it would be Clingan, and there will be a couple teams calling to get the big man if so
4) San Antonio Spurs
I'll stick with the Spurs getting Castle at 4 to be able to get the most ideal pick for what this team needs
Castle brings a ton of defense with the projection to be a great finisher around the rim with his athleticism, improving playmaking over time, and the hope is to be able to fix his shooting and get him in the right direction where he was in high school
There is still a world where the Spurs move up to #1, which is a low chance, but the chance they do, they could pair Risacher or Sarr up with Wemby
5) Detroit Pistons
Buzelis will continue to go to Detroit here in my final mock as his stock has rose up completely on where he would be drafted come round one of the draft night
Projects as an above average three point shooter, with the idea of being a great help side defender and secondary shot blocker
Gives the Pistons another wing to pair alongside Cade Cunningham to help space the floor out for years to come and help bring versatility defensively
6) Charlotte Hornets
Knecht constantly has moved up the board here in the past month and I find him going up to 6 with Charlotte as a good fit
Overall best offensive player in the draft and coming out of college, he will bring experience scoring wise as a versatile player on that end of the floor, with great athleticism
Will open the floor up for Ball and Miller to be able to go to work and run the PnR game as an occasional ball-handler
There is a good chance this pick is traded for teams that are wanting to move up and get Clingan
7) Portland Trail Blazers
Clingan after not going first overall, will slide down to Portland here at 7, who are reportedly very high and interested in him to pair alongside Ayton
He is a very high level defender that will be an anchor of a defense for years, as his offensive game is still developing, and will be along the same timeline as the rest of this Blazers group
Very good chance this pick is traded if the package is intriguing enough to do so, similar to Charlotte, where there will be plenty of teams wanting to get Clingan on their team
8) San Antonio Spurs (via TOR)
Despite grabbing a guard at 4, the Spurs opt to go with a more offensive guard here at 8 that they have been rumored to get for months now
Dillingham brings a ton of offense, and a spark plug off the bench, who would change around the way defenses attack them when he is on the court alongside Wembanyama
Rumors of drafting a different guard or maybe a forward could be true and would not be surprised if they do so, or end up trading back to get more value
9) Memphis Grizzlies
I know there are some questions on why this is a pick for the Grizzlies here, and trust me, I would be caught off guard too
But Carter's defensive skillset along with his improving jump shot in the past two seasons makes him an intriguing pick for the Grizz
Anthony Carter, current Grizzlies assistant, is the father of Devin so the connection runs deep there
Too many rumors around Marcus Smart, despite the Grizzlies lack of interest in wanting to trade him, make me to believe that Memphis goes ahead and gets him
Rumors also about trading up is very true and hopeful, as well with the idea to trade down and get a center later in the draft
10) Utah Jazz
Utah gets a good young wing with high defensive upside, really promising athleticism and finishing around the rim at a high level, along with a developing shot
The Jazz wants to build around Lauri Markkanen and this could be a guy that helps become a building piece, especially on the defensive end of the floor
There is a chance that Utah trades up or down and doesn't end up taking a player here at 10 to be able to try and acquire more assets to build up for another trade Â
11) Chicago Bulls
Post Giddey-Caruso trade, I try to make Bulls fans feel a bit better about their trade by giving them a great upside wing that can do it all
Holland is a great defending wing that finishes at a high rate around the rim. Needs to be a better shooter and that will only come with time I feel
Allows them to pair Patrick Williams with Holland defensively, especially if Caruso is moved away
There is a chance Chicago also moves up as they have been connected to Donovan Clingan and Matas Buzelis
12) Oklahoma City Thunder (via HOU)
I end up still giving the Thunder a guard, but ultimately pick Jared McCain, one of the best shooters in this class
Will bring a ton offensively, as previously mentioned being one of the top shooters in this class, as well as a ton of hustle plays, projecting to be a secondary ball handler for a team
OKC could try and package this with future capital to get an experienced player due to the "weaker" draft class
13) Sacramento Kings
Tidjane Salaun's hype has died down since last week, as it reflects here in my mock as well by dropping him down to 13
The Kings had him in for a workout recently and were reportedly impressed with his overall metrics and shooting
He projects as an average to above average shooter with a ton of tools to be a good 3&D wing in this league
Could see Sacramento going with a big man here as well, with Zach Edey being the other guy on the board
14) Portland Trail Blazers (via GSW)
Topic falls down a ton here in my final mock, although I still believe there is a chance he can be taken much higher again
I mock him here just to continue to give Portland more options to have other guards to surround Henderson who is the clear cornerstone piece, as well as pairing Topic with other rookie Donovan Clingan, who I picked at #7
This pick most likely gets traded in my opinion for a team wanting to really move up and snag a solid guard, so Topic could end up going #14, just to a different team
15) Miami Heat
Edey going here to Miami is a very random one, but it is a fit either way if he is a Heat, or not
Can give this team extreme size and rebounding coming off the bench, with the ability to score around the rim at a very high level
Even if the Heat aren't picking here, I feel like this is a good range for Edey to go, with some reports saying Miami wants to move upÂ
Edey could solve an issue Miami has been dealing with for a while in having reliable size coming off the bench doing some of the dirty work
16) Philadelphia 76ers
I am a fan of Collier going to the 76ers, because we saw the success that they had pairing Harden and Maxey together
Collier can be a primary playmaker for this group, with the ability to finish around the rim at a high rate for his position
Bolstering this backcourt to get more depth going forward is key, and a former top recruit could find himself in a good situation in Philly
17) Los Angeles Lakers
JJ Redick takes over as head coach and the first thing he does is want to use the 17th pick to get a player who could crack the rotation year one
Look no further than Ja'Kobe Walter, who has a real shot of doing so due to his high level scoring at all three levels, and his improving defense that could put him over the top
This is another guard to have paired alongside Lebron to open the floor up, and there isn't a better coach to be with if you want to improve as a shooter in this league
18) Orlando Magic
Bub Carrington is a high riser in this draft and there are a ton of signs pointing towards the Magic picking him here at 18
Fantastic scorer with a ton of size, improving playmaking, and self-proclaimed "underrated defense" could be a good guy for this Magic group
The Magic love to get taller guards and this could fit the mold here by getting a taller guard with good shooting numbers to help bolster that part of their needs
19) Toronto Raptors (via IND)
Toronto unfortunately doesn't have a top end pick, despite being one of the bottom 10 teams in the league this year, due to the Jakob Poeltl trade
They end up going with another wing/big, despite having a couple on the roster already, but I see them moving off one of them this offseason anyways.Â
da Silva can play the 3/4 with his size and versatility, and could really contribute to a team in year one due to his great shooting and cutting for his position and size
20) Cleveland Cavaliers
Teams are really high on Furphy due to his upside as a shooter from his late season minutes he earned in his freshman year at Kansas
Cleveland had him in for a workout and are reportedly high on him, which could be something we see them dive into come draft night
Getting more shooting to come off the bench to create spacing in the playoffs is vital, and we could see rotational players get flipped this offseason to fit the team under new coach, Kenny Atkinson
21) New Orleans Pelicans (via MIL)
The Pelicans are in an odd position drafting wise with the roster they currently have constructed but they are going to be in the market for a couple new big men
They opt to go with the replacement big man for Valanciunas that is more of a typical big in Missi
Rebounds, blocks shots and finishes around the rim all very well but still a raw talent with a ton of potential and a good frame
There are rumors that the Pelicans are willing to trade this pick for a haul of second-round picks so this could be shipped elsewhere, as we have seen them defer the 17th pick back to LA already
22) Phoenix Suns
The Suns have brought in a ton of experienced defensive wings in this draft to look to build a defense around their three stars, so I give them the all-around best defender in the class here
Dunn will be a menace defensively on the perimeter and in the paint, a great defensive get for any team, despite his clear offensive struggles
There is a chance the Suns trade back to get another couple picks in value and take him lower on the board, but either way, I think they walk out with Dunn as a Sun
23) Milwaukee Bucks (via NO)
I think Ware should go higher than 23, due to his projections and how he could end up being a threat for any team going forward
But with the reports that the Bucks are looking to part ways with Brook Lopez and/or Bobby Portis this offseason, getting Ware at 23 here could be a great replacement for either of the two going forward
Great athletic finisher, who can crash the glass, block shots, and shown willingness to stretch the floor out
24) New York Knicks (via DAL)
Well, the Knicks might have just done some insane stuff here the night before the draft acquiring Mikal Bridges, but by doing so, they might've closed the door on Isaiah Hartenstein returning to this team
With that being said, they can go draft a guy in Filipowski that can fit a five-wide offense that is crucial for playoff time, and projects as an above average defender and rebounder due to his size
There is a good chance the Knicks trade one of these two picks here at 24 or 25, so do not be surprised if it happens
25) New York Knicks
I will continue to push this pick because the fit is too good for both sides
Again, this pick can be traded before or on draft night, but we stick and pick in this world
George is an unbelievable shooter that would fit right in with this Knicks group that will always be looking for guys who can open up the floor and be catch and shoot threats
His ability to be a connector in passing is impressive and underrated, which could be a threat with this Knicks chemistry
26) Washington Wizards (via LAC)
Washington took a center at 2 and now can continue to stack up on the frontcourt with a player in Smith who is very versatile
Smith is a guy who can stretch the floor and shoot at a high rate for his position, rebound really well and finish around the rim. Defense isn't very great but he is with a good coach if he wants to develop as one
Washington has also expressed interest in moving up as well into just outside the lottery to get a better player
27) Minnesota Timberwolves
Due to Shannon's investiagtion that now has been closed and pleaded not guilty, his stock dropped. I know last mock I had him higher, but his draft age could play part into where he goes on draft night, and here is the case
This gives Minnesota a great scorer off the bench who is an experienced college player, and a great rebounder for his position
This pick could be traded as well to get a controllable piece off the bench, but if they stick and pick, Shannon could be an ideal get for the Wolves
28) Denver Nuggets
DaRon Holmes could be another guy who goes higher than this in the draft, but sometimes you get lucky and dominos fall around you to get to what you want
It seems as if the Nuggets have given a promise to Holmes, and shortly after, received a green room invite for the first night of the draft as well
Great rebounder, stretches the floor, finishes well around the rim in back to basket attempts, and can put the ball on the floor. All things that intrigue the Nuggets as they look to build depth around their star players
29) Utah Jazz (via OKC)
Utah can use their second first round pick on a guy who has shot up draft boards in the past week in Dadiet
Great on ball skills as a scorer with an upside as a playmaker and has shown some flashes defensively to hold his own
Being one of the youngest in his class, this could be a piece that Utah swings for in hopes to fill a need long-term at the guard position
30) Boston Celtics
Boston, coming off a NBA Championship, will be looking to reload on bench assets and could be doing so here with an experienced college player
Sheierman brings a ton offensively as a scorer and passer, who was one of the better passers for his position last year, and can rebound well, too
Allows them to have flexibility on who to play coming off the bench and due to his size, can play alongside whoever
