Week of Draft (6/22)
Alex McNinch (YSD)
1) Dallas Mavericks
Still sticking with Flagg obviously here as the consensus number one overall pick
This will now be about how they can allow him to develop off the ball for when Kyrie Irving returns from injury, but also needs to compete in the short-term so that the Mavs can be in a playoff position in the second half
Will be interested to see how Flagg can develop as a ball handler against NBA defenses
2) San Antonio Spurs
The Spurs have made it known that they are not fully closed off to the idea that Dillon Harper is the pick here at 2
There's a chance this pick could be moved as well, although I am not sure that Kevin Durant is going to gather the 2nd pick in this caseĀ
Still going with Harper here with the idea that one of the guards are on their way out and the uncertainty when Fox's deal runs up. Harper joins one of the better young cores in basketball
3) Philadelphia 76ers
Originally had Ace Bailey here at 3, but after measurements and the rumors on the workout fiasco, Philadelphia could be turned away and instead honing in on more of a defensive focused player
Edgecombe is my number two guy in this class overall and I think pairing him alongside these other scorers is perfect for the 76ers who are in desperate need for defense and athleticism
Bailey is still in play here due to his only workout scheduled being with Philly, but Edgecombe is the more well-rounded and complete player as of now
4) Charlotte Hornets
I have mocked a sharpshooting guard/wing hybrid to the Hornets for years now, and yet they pass it up every time. Third time is the charm here and Knueppel is the pick 100%
Mixture of shooting and finishing, Knueppel's second half at Duke made him look like he deserves to be picked at 4
Biggest keys for him will be ball handling and defense at the next level, but he is a more polished Dalton Knecht from a year ago, with the age and room for development in a long-term scenario
5) Utah Jazz
Now this could come as a shock, but Maluach has only visited with the Jazz, but this could change this week. But there are reports that the Jazz are extremely high on Khaman
Hard not to be looking at a massive lengthy big man who is the best interior defender in this class with great footwork and good instincts
Offense will have to come as he goes and his rebounding came into question late in the season, but I'm not too concerned there
Utah has shopped Walker Kessler for a year so this could eventually make that move more palatable
6) Washington Wizards
Man oh man, this ship really sunk itself hasn't it. If you were to tell me two months ago that the Wizards would get Bailey, I wouldn't be surprised. If you told me after the lottery that they would, I would call you insane
Well, that's the reality we are in right now with character issues coming into play, and the idea that Ace is prioritizing being the top option offensively wherever he gets drafted
Washington can allow that for him going forward, letting his natural scoring ability come into play, but Bailey's ball handling and defense also needs to evolve to back up his talk
7) New Orleans Pelicans
The Pelicans have been playing "Ring Around the Rosie" for years now with their guard scoring options, but there will be no lack of that here with Johnson
His ability to create a shot for himself is one of the best in the class and he can do it at every level
Will need to get stronger so that his finishes inside are more consistent. Defense also will need to improve with size, but Johnson is very competitive and should stand out in this class as a scorer
8) Brooklyn Nets
Last mock, I had the Nets getting a point guard, this one, I also mock a guard to them but a different one in Fears due to how the board shook
Fears is a great downhill scorer and solid passer but primarily his ball handling in an isolation situation is very intriguing
Tons of questions about his shooting ability and sometimes turnover issue could lead him to fall a bit but for his age he is highly coveted as a point guard prospect
9) Toronto Raptors
Toronto is in play for like 3 or 4 guys here at the ninth pick, but I think they will go with a name who is a big time riser in Essengue
Lengthy, athletic wing who can finish around the rim at ease, great defensive instincts and the development as a shooter could be interesting going forward
Toronto was pursuing Kevin Durant before his trade to Houston, so they could be in the market to draft a wing and Essengue's upside is worth taking a swing on
10) Phoenix Suns
Well, the Durant trade has happened and now the Suns are thrown into the top 10 instantly because of it
The pursuit for a big man in Phoenix is now the top priority for them and Queen here at 10 is the perfect get
Dynamic scorer at all three levels, with the ability to put the ball on the floor and dribble with comfort. Will be interesting to see his playmaking ability develop in the two man game with the plethora of guards
Rebounding isn't a concern but his size and strength could be a concern as a 5, and long-term could be a 4. Most importantly, the Suns get to pick in the lottery.
11) Portland Trail Blazers
I think this could be confusing based on the amount of guards that the Blazers have, but Jakucionas is different than the other ones currently on the roster
Playmaking first guy could really make an impact off the bench to control the second unit compared to the scoring heavy punch of Scoot and Simons
This is also the only known team that Kasparas has worked out for, so connecting the dots there makes this the most realistic play at 11
12) Chicago Bulls
I had Bryant going later in my last mock, but I think he has risen up high and impressed in all of his workouts to be a middle-lottery guy
Chicago gets a crazy talented young player who scores at all three levels and has such a high upside, reminds me a lot of the prospect that Jalen Johnson was from Duke, with a more polished shot
Defensively will need to make strides but with his size and athleticism he can cover that going forward. Bulls get a great scoring wing that starts the long-term rebuild and re-tooling
13) Atlanta Hawks (via SAC)
Richardson's stock has plummeted with his measurements at the combine, but has impressed in some workouts, with one being in Atlanta
Great shooter and defender, but with his size now he is going to be forced as a smaller 2 guard. Could be an eventual play next to Dyson Daniels if Trae Young ends up getting traded
Wouldn't be surprised in the Hawks go big here but I think Richardson brings shooting to this group that they don't have as much from an off the ball guy
14) San Antonio Spurs (via ATL)
Murray-Boyles is someone who has bounced around mocks based on his playstyle and lack of shooting. It makes for an intriguing story come draft night
The Spurs would be getting a dynamic defender who can excel at it from the perimeter to the paint. His size for his age and strength is very exciting to see
The eventual development of the outside shot will be a key to his overall profile as a player, but we have seen this for years where a non-shooter gets drafted and becomes average at it at the least
15) Oklahoma City Thunder (via MIA)
The rich gets richer here with Demin going to Oklahoma City, who are coming off their first ever NBA title
Demin was one of the top guys in the preseason mock drafts but his interesting up and down season at BYU lead to his falling on the board, with some have him much lower than I do
I think OKC sees this opportunity here and capitalizes on a guy who is valued more to them which helps them stack up on playmakers to build around Shai, because if there is one criticism from this one title run, it was the lack of playmakers around him
16) Memphis Grizzlies (via ORL)
The Grizzlies find a way to get into the first round following the Desmond Bane trade
The dream pick for the Grizzlies falls in their lap here at 16 in Cedric Coward who is a player that the organization has been trying to identify for years
High level shooter, can finish around the rim, defends at a high-level, super athletic. This is the perfect guy for this team to get to put alongside Ja Morant
There is a chance the Grizzlies trade up or back as well, but if they go up even, I think that Coward is the slam dunk pick
17) Minnesota Timberwolves (via DET)
The Timberwolves are in an interesting spot this offseason trying to build the perfect team around Anthony Edwards, but are limited in resources to do so
Naz Reid's impending free agency looms in the balance and Minnesota should be trying to look for a replacement just in case
Insert Asa Newell here at 17 for the Wolves as a backup big who can rebound at a high level, is a good rim runner to work that PnR game with Dillingham off the bench
18) Washington Wizards (via MEM)
One of the few from the original mock draft that I will stick to as a good selection is Thomas Sorber to the Wizards
I think it makes too much sense wanting to pair another big who is interior heavy alongside Sarr and Sorber is the guy to do that
Already taking Bailey at 5, there is no need to try and get anyone else as a wing or guard here at 18, so go different and build that depth for the future with one of the more underrated guys in the class
19) Brooklyn Nets (MIL)
Back to back bigs here in the draft but this time the Nets grab Joan Beringer from France who is a project pick overall
Rim running big with good size and length, but is super young and inexperienced. Day'Ron Sharpe is set to hit restricted free agency and could be on his way out.Ā
So in steps Beringer to be a backup big that can be a long-term project with high upside with this young team
20) Miami Heat (via GSW)
The Heat brought in Riley for a workout and was reportedly impressed with his overall performance so that is my reasoning for the mock here
I really liked Riley coming into his freshman year but struggled at times with his consistency and at times you forget he is out on the court
His second half of the season though, was much much better and was finally able to show what he was capable of on the ball as a scorer
Miami has plenty of wings but with Wiggins, Jaquez, and Haywood all expendable, Riley being only 19 could be a guy to pair with Ware as a young core for the Heat
21) Utah Jazz (via MIN)
Just mentioned, Clifford can end up going higher potentially, but I think he might suffer the classic, "old college player" mold that teams are scared of. But Utah can snag him here and gets a competitor
Fans fell in love with him around tournament time where he lead Colorado St to the NCAA tournament. Served as the primary ball handler, but did everything on the court for his team
Jazz got a big man at 4 so they look to get a guard/wing hybrid here at 21, but wouldn't be surprised if a team trades up into the spot for Clifford
22) Atlanta Hawks (via LAL)
I don't think the Hawks draft twice, so I'm going to play the odds game in them drafting a 4/5 in this draft, while also giving a good slot for Wolf here at 22
Wolf can handle the ball extremely well for a big man and can take guys off the dribble, as well as dish it out
Not a high volume shooter, but shows the ability to knock shots down when he does. Another older college guy, so his value isn't as high, but could benefit a team by having his experience and ball handling
23) New Orleans Pelicans (via IND)
New Orleans makes a trade with the Pacers to get this 23rd pick, which could be a long-term play to move up higher into the top 5
Say they don't and they pick here, Ben Saraf is one of the more interesting guys to look at in this class with his high level playmaking
Tre Johnson was the first pick for them, who is a straight scorer, so getting a straight playmaker here at 23 would be a key get for the Pels
24) Oklahoma City Thunder (LAC)
The Thunder pick again here at 24 and get another guy who was supposed to be at the top of this draft class coming into this previous season
McNeeley is a solid shooter but wasn't as efficient as he could've and should've been. But there is stuff on tape that shows he can be a great spot up guy at the next level
I highly doubt that OKC picks here but if they do, this shoud be the direction they go
25) Orlando Magic (via DEN)
Gator boys stay hot, and this Gator gets to stay right at home over in Orlando. It's hard to take bias out of this, but Clayton here at 25 is the best steal of the draft if this is how it plays out
Unreal shooter with the ability to score at every level, including athleticism he toned down this past season he showed a ton of his first year at Florida
After acquiring Desmond Bane, they keep loading up on shooting at the guard position to replace the losses. and they get probably the best shooter in the class with Walt
26) Brooklyn Nets (via NYK)
Pick 3 of 4 here for the Nets so who knows what they will do and if they select here at all, but you go with the best young guy on the board in Traore
The string of guys who had a ton of hype going into this season continues at the back end of the first hereĀ
Great playmaker, might be the best one in the class. Everything else is going to have to be a project. He has good feel for his midrange as well.
27) Brooklyn Nets (via HOU)
The other back end pick for the Nets is a guy who could probably go higher or a team trades up to be able to get him
Flemming shot up out of nowhere out of St Joseph's and is a big wing who can kind of be a plug and play gadget player
Defense, shooting, playmaking a bit, and interior scoring. Can play pretty much any of 3,4, and a small ball 5.
28) Boston Celtics
The Tatum injury stinks a ton for the Celtics, but one of the big stories for them was that they were looking to shed some salary this offseason to get under the tax threshold. Which means guys like Jrue Holiday, Sam Hauser or even Payton Pritchard could be on the move
Lanier is a perfect guy on a low contract to come in and be an instant impact from beyond the arc as one of the best shooters in this class
Needs to be better defensively, and projects more as a 2 with his poor ball-handling. But he is an experienced winner who is lights out from three
29) Phoenix Suns (via CLE)
Now after taking a big at 10, Phoenix doubles down on that idea and gets a guy who has risen up the boards following the draft combine and individual workouts
Raynaud's ability to put the ball on the floor and score at all three levels is very impressive. Despite that, there are concerns about his ability to translate to the next level and will need to bulk up
Phoenix has Nick Richards as their primary big, but drafting two young guys could give them the opportunity to flip him to a team for more assets to replenish
30) Los Angeles Clippers (via OKC)
Last first round pick goes to the Clippers and I give them a project player who was a former top 20 recruit in Drake Powell
Powell expressed his displeasure with his role at UNC his freshman year so he stays in the cycle and teams are really interested in his athletic ability
Good size and frame, his athleticism and defensive upside allows him to slide up into the first round
The Clippers can add him alongside a really good forward room and can help transform him into a NBA level defender, while letting his scoring ability naturally come
