Post-Lottery & Combine (5/15)
Alex McNinch (YSD)
1) Dallas Mavericks
I do not know how Dallas even got here honestly, this is quite the miracle and saving grace for the franchise post-Luka trade fiasco
Flagg will instantly make this one of the best defensive frontcourt duos in the league alongside perennial All-Star, Anthony Davis
Will get a ton of time on the ball with Kyrie out, but Coach Kidd should help unlock Flagg's ball handling ability at the next level
2) San Antonio Spurs
The Spurs jumping up to 2 could make this pick expendable in hopes to land a superstar alongside Wemby
Despite having De'Aaron Fox and the reigning Rookie of the Year in Stephon Castle on the roster, the Spurs have the chance to get Harper who can instantly make this one of the best young backcourt duos in the league
Natural scorer at the guard position and should hopefully have a higher assist rate now at the next level with a different role asked
3) Philadelphia 76ers
Philly jumps way up the board and makes this horrid season worthwhile with drafting one of the top prospects in this draft class
Bailey's measurements were not the greatest, but you cannot deny his pure skill as a scorer, and athleticism to bring on the defensive end
Entering in on a playoff-ready team, learning from a guy like Paul George puts Ace in the perfect spot for his development as a cornerstone piece
4) Charlotte Hornets
Lamelo Ball finally gets a running mate at guard, and I think VJ could become one of the top 2 players in this class if he pans out correctly
Helps protect Lamelo on the defensive end most importantly, but also will be an incredible cutter with him offensively
Will need to improve as a shooter, but his experience already playing off the ball with playmaking heavy guards at Baylor should help
5) Utah Jazz
Utah unfortunately falls way down from being projected the number one overall pick, to now being at 5
Still getting a really good guard in Fears here at this pick. Knows how to get into the paint and score, solid defender, will bring something different at guard for this team to compliment Isaiah Collier
Still leaves the door open for more additions through the rest of the draft and into next year where they are expected to be againÂ
6) Washington Wizards
Another case where the team who clearly was miserable all year and had a chance to change their franchise, falls into an awful spot
Picking the best available here in Johnson, who is very similar to Jordan Poole for this team, but with Poole being expendable as well as only 2 years left on his deal, Johnson makes sense
High volume scorer from all three levels, some upside defensively with his length and athleticism. Played good D off the ball in college
Wiz could also go center here to pair alongside Sarr to keep the frontcourt big
7) New Orleans Pelicans
Make or break type of offseason for the New Orleans Pelicans, and they bring in Joe Dumars to help reshape this team
Knueppel is a great pick here for the Pels, giving them another wing who can score from outside, with a ton of upside to continue to expand on his finishing game at the next level
Had some stretches of inconsistency, but playing off the ball with experienced guards should only help his game
8) Brooklyn Nets
This is one of Brooklyn's FOUR first round picks here, so this is the one they won't trade in my eyes
Jakucionis is my projection for the Nets here with Fears off the board, but they are getting a big guard who can kind of do it all and isn't afraid to get in the mix
Turnover issues and some shooting struggles are there, but his early season play showed me enough of who he really is on the next level
Brooklyn starts their gearing up of drafted players with a point guard for the future
9) Toronto Raptors
Toronto I think is in one of the best spots throughout the draft scenario based on the team they have now and the players that could be available here
I'm going to go with Maluach for them, with Jakob Poeltl's deal expiring after this upcoming season, getting a clone of his with a much higher defensive profile is perfect for this team
If Maluach's touch can improve, he can be clear and by far the best big man prospect in this class when we look back on it
10) Houston Rockets (via PHX)
I am going out on a limb to say the Rockets might not pick here at 10, but let's theorize if they do
After taking Reed Sheppard last year at 4, and with Fred VanVleet's option being on the table here, Egor Demin could be the guy that Houston takes a shot on early
Similar body type and size as Luka coming out of the draft process, but two different players. Demin is in the top tier of playmakers for this class. His shooting was streaky after a hot first two months of college ball for him
Houston can create a massive lineup with Demin at the 1 and let the defenders surround him. I like this pick a lot for Houston if they stick
11) Portland Trail Blazers
Portland surged late in the season to push themselves back in the draft order to picking towards the end of the lottery
They go with a high upside swing in Jase Richardson, son of NBA legend, Jason Richardson
Jase is a phenomenal shooter from the left side who really took advantage of his opportunity and shined in the last month of the season
His measurables were concerning at the combine, but Richardson's upside as a knockdown shooter and solid defender for his size makes him an intriguing prospect Portland can pair alongside Scoot Henderson
12) Chicago Bulls
Bulls fans are going to see the coin flip graphic in their nightmares for the rest of their lives after missing out on getting the first overall pick
They luck out getting a great asset here in Queen who once Vucevic's contract runs up this year, can be the center of this group going forward
Versatile big who showed his ability to stretch the floor late in the tournament, needs to continue to get stronger to battle with other bigs but has the shot making of a prioritized offensive player
13) Atlanta Hawks (via SAC)
Could've been drafted in this range last year, Boyles returned to South Carolina and now looks to cash in with an Atlanta team that continues to build around Trae Young
Post-centric player with great footwork and is built body type wise for a kid this young, strong as can be and should have no problem battling with his size and strength on the glass
Needs to show the ability to stretch the floor at the next level, but can mesh well with the other forwards and bigs on the roster to make this a fun small ball type of lineupÂ
14) San Antonio Spurs (via ATL)
McNeely didn't have the best year projected for himself at UConn, but as a prospect, I think there is a chance that he can rise up boards following his combine week and individual workouts
The one thing the Spurs have lacked to surround this team with is good shooters who can run off a ball screen and score. McNeely is projected to do that, do not let the overall season stats dictate his game
Rebounds well for his position as well, competitor and isn't afraid to get in the mix, which helps this new Spurs culture. I think McNeely will end up in the lottery again like he was projected in high school
15) Oklahoma City Thunder (via MIA)
OKC might trade this pick, and I think it is very likely that they do so, but we will project as if they don't.
Essengue is an interesting prospect as a lengthy defending wing with a developing scoring ability and is very similar to Bilal Coulibaly a few years ago, just not as fine tuned scoring wise
With contracts coming to a crossroad, Lu Dort could be on the move to clear up cap space to extend their stars, which opens the need for another tall defending wing, here comes Noa Essengue
16) Orlando Magic
As of now, Bryant isn't projected this high, but he's another guy that after the combine and workouts will shoot up boards and become a household name throughout this process
Orlando needs more shooters and you can't have enough of those, which Bryant is a very solid one for his position and size. Also a very solid defender, creating a good 3&D prospect at the wing position
Continue to get stronger to body up other 3's and 4's in the NBA and I think Bryant can really turn some heads
17) Minnesota Timberwolves (via DET)
Traore was one of the prized players before the season when talking about the prospects in this draft, but has struggled in his draft year season overseas
Good size for a guard and is in the top tier category of playmakers in this class alongside Egor Demin, Traore might be the better of the two
Needs to improve as a shooter, but mechanics look smooth enough to translate. With Mike Conley getting to the end of his career, Minnesota looks to add another guard to that youth group to fill the eventual void
18) Washington Wizards (via MEM)
I mentioned with their first pick that they could go with a big to pair alongside Sarr, but ultimately chose a combo guard. Now they get their big to make this a great first round
Sorber is one of the more slept on, quiet prospects mainly due to his lack of team success at Georgetown
For his age, his body reminds me of Jalen Duren being so built so young, and had similar stats in college as him as well
Big dude who can crash the glass, block a ton of shots, underrated passer and has the ability to score inside and at the mid-range level. One of my favorite prospects
19) Brooklyn Nets (MIL)
Now I think this is a guy who can rise up even higher than he is right now, or could turn out into a great projected player down the road if he sticks
Going point guard with their first pick, the Nets are getting a good project pick that has a natural scoring ability and willingness to attack and score off the ball
This is also the second of four first rounders for Brooklyn, so there's a chance this can be on the move, but I think this is a good range for Riley nonetheless
20) Miami Heat (via GSW)
Rasheer Fleming just seems like a Miami Heat pick. I think they could go guard here, but I think it's either Fleming or Nique Clifford here for them
Fleming was awesome at St Joseph's as a shooter and really solid defender. Great secondary shot blocker and loves to get in the mix with it all
Miami can benefit getting more guys like this to play over the Haywood Highsmith type of players who won't benefit you offensively. Fleming could be their most coveted prospect instantly outside of Kel'el Ware
21) Utah Jazz (via MIN)
Just mentioned, Clifford can end up going higher potentially, but I think he might suffer the classic, "old college player" mold that teams are scared of. But Utah can snag him here and gets a competitor
Fans fell in love with him around tournament time where he lead Colorado St to the NCAA tournament. Served as the primary ball handler, but did everything on the court for his team
Jazz get a guard with their top 5 pick and now a polished college player that can make an impact immediately here at 21 in Clifford
22) Atlanta Hawks (via LAL)
I don't think the Hawks draft twice, so I'm going to play the odds game in them drafting a 4/5 in this draft, while also giving a good slot for Wolf here at 22
Wolf can handle the ball extremely well for a big man and can take guys off the dribble, as well as dish it out
Not a high volume shooter, but shows the ability to knock shots down when he does. Another older college guy, so his value isn't as high, but could benefit a team by having his experience and ball handling
23) Indiana Pacers
Newell was a consensus lottery guy before the season began, but since has fallen due to the confusion of scouts whether or not he is a 4 or a 5 at the next level
Indiana is in need of big man depth, especially with the unknown of Myles Turner going into next year and Isaiah Jackson coming off major surgery set to hit free agency, so Newell slides in
Newell can score around the basket with ease and has good footwork. Athletic as hell for his size, but his rebounding number aren't as consistent as hoped and his defense fell apart as the season went on
This could be a case of right NBA team, wrong college choice for Newell and can really turn into something once he gets in the right spot
24) Oklahoma City Thunder (LAC)
Another pick for OKC and again, with their already heavy roster, they might trade out of this spot. But we're going with the Frenchman, Beringer here
Rim running big with a ton of athleticism and great in the PnR game. Defense is getting there but uses his length to his advantage, will need to put on some weight
OKC can use an extra big off the bench and a player like Beringer to compliment both Holmgren and Hartenstein
25) Orlando Magic (via DEN)
Gator boys stay hot, and this Gator gets to stay right at home over in Orlando. It's hard to take bias out of this, but Clayton here at 25 is the best steal of the draft if this is how it plays out
Unreal shooter with the ability to score at every level, including athleticism he toned down this past season he showed a ton of his first year at Florida
Similar to the Bryant pick earlier for Orlando, the key additions to this team need to involve shooters, and there is no lack of that with Walter Clayton
26) Brooklyn Nets (via NYK)
The thing Brooklyn has lacked in the past few seasons just from a number standpoint is guards, and especially those who can facilitate. We took Kasparas for them first, then a high-upside wing after, now a mystery man in Saraf
Played really well in the international circuit, Saraf is one of the guards in the top few tiers of playmakers in the class
Shined well in the EuroCup, the crafty lefty will need to continue to improve as a scorer but will have the time here in Brooklyn
27) Brooklyn Nets (via HOU)
Here comes one of the few guys here at the end of the first round that is a 50/50 stay or go back to school. So for the Nets' fourth first rounder, we pick an absolute stud who can end up going higher by June
Formerly at UAB, committed to Michigan currently, Lendeborg looked like a man amongst boys with his ability to crash the glass and score inside at will
Shooting has come along but will need to see his footwork to keep up with small ball lineups in the NBA
28) Boston Celtics
The Tatum injury stinks a ton for the Celtics, but one of the big stories for them was that they were looking to shed some salary this offseason to get under the tax threshold. Which means guys like Jrue Holiday, Sam Hauser or even Payton Pritchard could be on the move
Lanier is a perfect guy on a low contract to come in and be an instant impact from beyond the arc as one of the best shooters in this class
Needs to be better defensively, and projects more as a 2 with his poor ball-handling. But he is an experienced winner who is lights out from three
29) Phoenix Suns (via CLE)
I would not be surprised if the Suns make a move and end up picking earlier in the draft as well. They get a really underrated prospect who should rise as the process goes on, but could stick at the back end and be a stud
Philon broke out his freshman year at Alabama showing off his defensive ability to stick with some of the best guards in the country. His offensive game was inconsistent and needs to find his shot at the next level
Stats are skewed with the fact he played next to a ball dominant guard in Mark Sears, but the minutes with him as the 1, shows he can play and develop
30) Los Angeles Clippers (via OKC)
Every year I have a prospect that is a 4 year guy that is projected late but I fall in love with, and this year it's Cedric Coward. He's currently committed to Duke, but with his combine testing and workouts, it's looking more likely he will stay and jump up to as high as just outside the lottery
Shoulder injury made him miss most of his year, but if he played the year, he'd be consensus top 15 guy. Fantastic shooter, gets into the mix of it, can score off the dribble
His overall defense is his biggest question mark, but for the Clippers, having another spark plug shooter off the bench once Norman Powell checks out, is going to be deadly if Coward falls this far
